In this post, we look at the importance of having competently trained Fire Marshals.
Recently I was delivering a course for a client when the fire alarm sounded, which turned out to be a fire drill. Witnessing the evacuation to the fire muster point highlighted to me the importance of having well trained, competent Fire Marshals.
The Negative.
To me there appeared to be a lack of training, or skill fade.
- Confusion.
- Lack of command and control.
- Fire Marshals knowing their roles.
- Knowing what equipment is accessible to them.
- Accounting for office/Workplace staff.
What concerned me was all these factors kicked in during a controlled exercise. What if it had been a real fire, flames, noise and smoke, people panicking and acting irrationally?
Sadly the truth is that the above bullet points would more than likely be significantly magnified in a negative way.
The Positive.
It is an easy fix! All these factors can be dealt with in a simple proactive manner, with good training, pre-planning, and support. People in the workplace are tasked with, or volunteer for Fire Marshal roles.
These people have a responsible role to carry out and require suitable training and support.
The Fire Marshal needs a good sound knowledge of the following:
- Able to understand the hazards and risks associated with fire in the workplace.
- Have a good understanding of how fire risk is controlled in the workplace.
- Able to understand the principles and practice of fire safety management at work.
- Have a good understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the nominated Fire Marshal.
We can deliver you a professional course to get your Fire Marshals up to a standard that will ensure your building can be evacuated in a controlled manner as well as your Fire Marshal acting proactively on a weekly basis checking various factors within their designated zone.
This course is designed for employees who want to develop their basic fire safety awareness to assist their employer by undertaking more specific fire safety roles in the workplace to manage fire risk, such as Fire Marshals.
Successful candidates sitting a regulated course will be awarded a national level 2 qualification.
Duration. A minimum of 6 contact hours in the classroom.
Certification. The qualification does not have an expiry date but refresher training and keeping up to date with changes to policies, procedures, and new legislation through ongoing CPD is vital. We strongly advise annually.
Courses can be delivered as Ofqual regulated through NUCO or unregulated through Phoenix Emergency Response Consultancy.
Groups of up to 10 can be catered for.
